According to AARP, nearly 80% of adults want to remain in their own homes as they grow older—and for good reason. Aging in place supports better health by keeping older adults active in their daily routines and lowering risks often associated with institutional care. The comfort of familiar surroundings reduces stress and confusion, while staying connected to friends and neighbors strengthens emotional well-being. Research even shows that strong social connections in later life can extend life expectancy by several years, with benefits comparable to giving up smoking. The financial impact is just as compelling: assisted-living and nursing facilities can cost between $48,000 and $100,000 each year, while remaining at home is often far more affordable, especially for those who already own their homes.

Still, aging in place comes with challenges. As health needs evolve, everyday chores and getting around can become more difficult, leading many older adults to consider alternative living arrangements. That’s where Eastside Friends of Seniors (EFS) steps in. With just a little extra support, older adults can continue living safely and comfortably in the place they love most. Our volunteers are at the heart of this mission. Community members generously give their time and talents, making EFS’s approach a true model for aging in place. They provide not only practical help but also warmth and companionship. In turn, volunteers often share how enriched they feel—through the wisdom, perspective, and deep connections they gain. This two-way exchange is what makes aging in place with EFS so powerful: everyone involved benefits.

At EFS, we see our role as weaving together compassion and support in a way that strengthens the fabric of our community. Aging in place is more than a goal—it’s our commitment to honoring lives while fostering resilience, joy, and belonging for all.
