At Eastside Friends of Seniors, we see aging not as a problem to solve, but rather as a life stage to honor.
Every week, we witness stories that challenge the outdated assumptions
so often associated with growing older. We meet volunteers in their 70s and 80s
delivering groceries and providing companionship to their neighbors. We hear about members rediscovering their independence thanks to a simple ride to a doctor’s appointment
or help around the house. And we hear about laughter—so much laughter—in
the conversations and friendships that form when people feel seen, valued,
and supported
Aging is not about fading; It's about unfolding.
It’s easy to focus on what diminishes as we grow older. And yes, there are real challenges. But what if we also focused on what deepens? Wisdom. Perspective. Empathy. Gratitude. The ability to slow down and savor moments. At Eastside Friends of Seniors, we believe that aging can be an expansive time full of growth, connection, and community.
We also believe that positive aging doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens in neighborhoods where people care about one another. It happens when we make space for older adults to stay engaged and active. It happens when we remind one another that no one is ever “too old” to matter.
We see this in our work every day.
When a volunteer sits with a client just to chat and share stories.
When a repaired handrail allows someone to safely age in place.
When a ride to the doctor gives peace of mind.
These are small things—but they’re powerful. And they’re building blocks of a community that truly values people at every age.
So today, I invite you to think about aging not with worry or resistance, but with curiosity and hope. Let’s redefine what it means to grow older—not as something to fear, but as something to celebrate.
At Eastside Friends of Seniors, we know: growing older is not the end of the story; It’s the start of something deeply meaningful.
Thank you for walking with us in this work, and for helping make our community one where people of all ages can thrive.
